The Wedding Experience at Rugged Horizon
How a Typical Wedding Works
Whether you are here for a day or a full weekend, here is how a wedding typically works at our venue:
Arrival and Set Up
Tables and chairs are already set up in the venue per your custom layout.
You (or your vendors) add your personal decor.
Add optional, on-site rental items to make decorating a breeze.
Rehearsal
Reduce wedding day jitters with a quick rehearsal. Review the order of your processional, song changes, and ceremony readings.
Package Tip: Add the Friday before your wedding so you can host an informal welcome dinner and stay overnight in the loft.
Getting Ready
Get ready on-site in the spacious and light-filled loft.
Hair and makeup artists can travel to you so that you can be present for the important moments of the day.
Ceremony
We set up the chairs for the ceremony the morning of your wedding (weather dependent), and you can add any personal decor or on-site rentals that you like.
Approximately 30 minutes before the ceremony, guests arrive and head toward the ceremony site. Ceremonies typically take place in our meadow, with mountain and valley views all around. The ceremony site is a short walk from the venue.
For guests with limited mobility, we offer a golf cart shuttle service. We are on hand during this time to direct guests and to help with the timing of your walk down the aisle.
Cocktail Hour and Photos
Immediately following the ceremony, guests transition back to the venue for social hour, refreshments, and yard games on the lawn.
You and your immediate family take photos in the meadow.
Reception
Dinner moves inside the barn and guests get to know each other over a shared meal and toasts.
Your guests will not feel confined to a single space or a strict timeline; they can linger on the patios, wander the grounds, play games on the lawn, and mingle inside and out.
Sunset and Evening
As the sun lowers behind the mountains, the lighting softens and the atmosphere shifts to an informal celebration.
Sunset photos typically happen during this time — a private moment that most couples appreciate before they rejoin the dancing, socializing, and celebration.
End of the Event
Make a grand exit and say warm goodbyes to all those who came to celebrate you.
Clean Up and Check-Out
On the Wedding Night:
By midnight, all events must be concluded and all food trash/open beverage containers thrown outside in the dumpsters.
Package Tip: Add delayed check-out to your package if you want to stay overnight in the loft after your wedding and finish cleaning up by Sunday at 2:00 pm.
By Check-Out:
By check-out for your package, all guests/vehicles must be departed, all events concluded, and the venue cleaned up. We will take down tables, chairs, and collect our rental items.
Want to know more about planning a destination wedding at Rugged Horizon?
Most of our weddings are destination weddings.
Rugged Horizon is an accessible Montana venue, while still feeling private. Guests typically fly into the Missoula airport and then drive to the property. Bus transportation is also available from Missoula hotels. If you choose to stay in St. Ignatius, hotels and vacation rentals are nearby. Most guests treat the trip as a short vacation around the wedding. They combine their wedding experience at our venue with a trip to Glacier National Park, an outing on Flathead Lake, or a float trip down the Clark Fork River in Missoula, a hike in the Mission Mountains, or a scenic drive through the Bison Range.
Because weddings are commonly destination-style here, vendors are familiar with traveling to the property and working together. We also provide guidance on timing, arrival and setup/teardown, and general flow so that you are not trying to figure out everything alone. We are here to help.
You do not need to be a local to comfortably host a wedding here — in fact, many of our couples have never even stepped foot in Montana until their wedding week. We offer video calls, resources, and lots of communication so that the beauty of Montana can be your “surprise” moment — not the timeline and flow of your event.
What We Help With
While couples choose their own vendors and customize a wedding that feels personal to them, we help with the structure of the day and your event. We help couples with:
Planning - We offer resources and tools to make planning easy. We help with: vendor referrals, creating a layout for your reception and ceremony, and crafting a timeline for your event.
Setup and Teardown of Tables & Chairs - We take care of the heavy lift. We set up and tear down the tables and chairs for you according to your specific layout, and will break those down at the end of the event. In case of inclement weather, we are here to help with the transition to an indoor backup plan.
Additional Amenities - On-site prep space for caterers; ice and water included in all of our packages; fans or firepits for guest comfort, no matter what the Montana weather brings.
Day-of Venue Coordination - When you arrive, we will greet you and provide you with an orientation to the venue and grounds. On the wedding day, we help with the timing of your walk down the aisle. During your reception, we come down at our regular intervals to check on the facilities.
Optional On-Site Rentals - We carry a wide selection of optional, add-on rental items for your wedding day, from arches for your ceremony to lighting and decor for inside the barn. Rentals will be delivered to the barn for you, and we take them back at the end of the event — you don’t need to haul a giant trailer up here or coordinate delivery and pickup times with multiple rental companies.
What You Are Responsible For
Hiring any additional vendors you would like to complete your day
Managing your detailed timeline
Setup and cleanup of your personal decor, property, and any items you choose to bring on site. At the end of the night, food trash and open beverage containers need to be thrown outside in the dumpsters. By check-out, all personal property (and any third-party rentals) must be removed from the venue; all guests and vehicles departed; barn broom clean.
All of our wedding packages offer ample time to setup and teardown so you do not feel rushed, and so that you can focus on the most important part of your day: gathering and celebrating with the people you love.
The Guest Experience at Rugged Horizon
One of the main reasons couples choose a Montana wedding is to spend meaningful time with the people they invited, in a beautiful setting.
Guests tend to stay longer here, interact more, and participate more fully in the wedding experience. Many couples choose to host a welcome gathering the night before the wedding so that families and friends can get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere. On the wedding day itself, guests wander through the fields, sip a refreshment on the garden patios, play yard games on the lawn, or gather to tell stories by the fire. The morning after the wedding, bring your close family and friends back for coffee and donuts while you take your time cleaning up and checking out. At Rugged Horizon, you have the flexibility to turn your wedding into a shared weekend experience, rather than a single evening event.
Weather and Practical Concerns
There is an old Montana adage, which is that “if you don’t like the weather in Montana, wait five minutes — it will change.” The weather in Montana may be famously unpredictable, but our venue is designed so that you can adapt to the changes and to embrace whatever the weather might bring. In fact, the changing seasons and the changing weather are what make Montana weddings unique and memorable.
We will discuss practical details with you well before your wedding so that you are not surprised during wedding week.
